There are many ways to get involved at Highland Terrace. Some families help once a year at a single event. Some take a recurring shift. Some coordinate an event or serve on the board. Right now we have people wearing a lot of hats, so if you're thinking about stepping in, we'd love to have you.

Show up for one event. Help at the book fair, staff a table at an evening event, or lend a hand with setup and cleanup. No prior involvement needed and no follow-up commitment.

Coordinate something small, join the Auction Committee, or take a recurring shift that fits your schedule, like K/1 lunch and recess support.

Ways to help

  • Our auction is the biggest fundraising event of the year. Love project management? Good at soliciting auction items? Love to plan a party? Rock at logistics? Join this fun-loving group and make some auction magic happen! The Auction typically occurs at the end of March. We have honed a solid event template over the last three years, so there is a comprehensive planning structure to work from.

    • Co-Chairs: Approximately 1-2 hours a week in the beginning months(Oct-Jan), 5-15 hrs a week closer to the date(Feb-Mar), depending on what you are responsible for and the size of the planning committee. One Co-chair should attend monthly PTA board meetings as needed to update on auction planning and needs, or share important information with the Director of Fundraising if you can’t attend.

    • Committee Members: Time commitment depends on what area you sign up for: could be only a couple hours a month on your own time helping procure auction items, could be a few hours a month helping plan food, could be five hours a week for the few weeks leading up to the event sourcing decorations or making signs in Canva. We have options for many levels of involvement!

  • Longest running HTPTA event at over 60 years! Coincides with our annual BookFair (this is organized by the Librarian). Co-chairs plan and execute the annual Pancake Breakfast, typically the first Saturday in February. This event requires many hands doing much work. There is an Event Manager component, a Kitchen Manager, and a Supply/logistics component, and a Volunteer Coordinator component. The planning team will coordinate with the Communication Director to set the communication plan and the Volunteer Coordinator to advertise and secure volunteers. 

    • Typically first Saturday morning of February - Friday setup 1:00-6:00pm, Saturday commitment 6:00am-1:00pm, Event 8:00-10:30am

    • 1-2 hrs/wk in December-January, 15-20 hrs the week of the event

    • Currently has a 5th-grade parent Co-chair coach, would join them for 26-27 and then lead 27-28.

  • Serve as a lead contact for the PTA Room Parent Coordinator and Classroom Teacher. Your primary job is occasional communication and coordination of class-specific support if asked by the teacher. Communication should always go through Parent Square (sent by the front office) to ensure all families are included and that messages can be translated if needed. Will coordinate a grade-level provided lunch for staff one time a year.

    • 30 min-1 hour a month, a little more if it's your grade level lunch month or if you are 5th grade room parent at graduation time.

  • This is our most consistent need, and one of the easiest ways to get started.

    Each year the school opens volunteer spots during kindergarten and first grade lunch and recess to help staff supervise students. At lunch, volunteers move around the lunchroom helping kids open packaging, assisting in the hot lunch line, directing tray return, and guiding students at the compost and recycling station. At recess, you might referee wiffle ball or soccer, pitch for younger students, or lead a game.

    It's a genuinely good way to see your kid's school day up close.

  • We both volunteered at lunch and watched how much independence they give the older kids and how much support they offer the younger ones. That's when we thought, this is a good place for our kids.
