Student Programs
Afterschool Enrichment
Every fall, winter, and spring, we offer 5 to 8 offerings of enrichment classes that take place right after school at Highland Terrace. These are classes offered by outside vendors, and sign-ups will be communicated through the weekly Orca Spout Out in Parent Square,
Past programs include: Chess Club, Coding, Lego Robotics, Hip Hop Dance Fitness, Art, Drama, Language Programs, Keyboarding Class, and more
Need-based scholarships are available, as well as discounts for parent volunteers. Classes are required to have a parent volunteer in order to run. Volunteers can either team up with another parent volunteer and each receive 50% off the course or volunteer solo to receive 100% off tuition.
Reading Challenge
Each February, our Book Fair kicks off a month celebrating our love of reading! Complete with an assembly opening ceremony, the Reading Olympics runs for four weeks with challenges to students to read every day. They track their days and spin for prizes throughout the month. We also have a new Visiting Author come to HT every year who meets with students, and they all get a free book to take home!
In-Class Science Enrichment
Nature Vision is our non-profit partner that provides place-based, experiential science programming directly to our classrooms. Nature Vision’s programs support current WA State K-12 Learning Standards in STEM education. Their educators come from a variety of scientific backgrounds, and the curriculum’s goal is to connect students to their local environment while making scientific content accessible and meaningful. Every grade level will have two to three in-class, hands-on science enrichment sessions taught by guest educators every year.
In-Class Art Enrichment
Our Art Docent Program brings a volunteer guest teacher into each classroom two to three times per year to provide engaging, hands-on art lessons. These lessons introduce students to a variety of artistic styles, techniques, and creative concepts. Through interactive projects, students have the opportunity to explore their creativity and build confidence in their artistic abilities.
Reflections Arts Contest
Reflections® is a theme-focused National PTA arts recognition program. The Reflections program celebrates K-12 student creativity and encourages school-age youth to express themselves through the arts. Submission categories are: Dance, Film/Video Production, Literature, Music, Photography, and Visual Arts. Student art is judged first at the school level. Finalists from the school level will move on to the district level and then the state and national levels for prize selection. School submissions are typically due at the beginning of December. Details and reminders will be sent through the weekly Orca Spout Out in Parent Square.
